The 6th Grade Keyboarding course is a required course for all sixth graders. The primary goal for the one-semester course is to develop proper keyboarding mastery, as well as increase keyboarding accuracy and speed. In addition to developing a strong keyboarding skill, the student will be introduced to the basics of Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Publisher). This will be accomplished through daily work, practice exercises, timed writings, and projects.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
The primary goal is for all students to become a touch typist, which is the ability to type without looking at their hands. This will best be accomplished if the students do the following:
· Eyes on copy · Sit up straight (leaning slight forward), arms close to body, and feet flat on the floor · Fingers slightly curved and rest on home row keys · Use appropriate finger reaches with hands slightly off the keyboard · Keyboard centered in front of body · Keyboard even with front edge of the desk
By the end of the semester the students will be able to type a minimum of 20 words per minute.
EVALUATIONS
The primary focus for this class is to develop a strong keyboarding skill. Therefore, a substantial part of their grade will be based on their willingness to apply good technique to their keyboarding. If that is accomplished, their speed and accuracy will follow naturally. Once we have developed their keyboarding skill, the students will be introduced to the basics of Microsoft Office. As their skill is developed, a project will be assigned.
The student’s grade will be based on the following:
· Daily Work (40%): drill work, timed writings, practice exercises · Tests (20%): written tests and projects · Six Weeks Exam (20%): cumulative six weeks test
